Physical and Mental Health

As an organization of predominately African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its members, but also the well-being of families and communities at large. To facilitate this effort, the Health Task Force was launched to provide concentrated expertise and focus on the Physical and Mental Health.

The Health Task Force educates and facilitates lifestyle changes for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of sorors and the communities that we serve. The Health Task Force objectives are:

  • Raising awareness about the importance and benefits of lifestyle changes that affect longevity, morbidity, and mortality;
  • Identifying organizational alliances for the sorority that will work to address pertinent health issues; and
  • Developing and implementing health-focused programs within the sorority and the communities we serve.

Sickle Cell Disease Awareness

A Sickle Cycle of Pain

Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease (SCD), is a genetic disease that causes red blood cells (RBCs) to have an abnormal crescent (“sickle”) shape.  This shape causes RBCs to get trapped in blood vessels, blocking blood from reaching parts of the body and can cause severe pain and tissue damage.  SCD affects 1 of every 500 African-American births, and approximately 100,000 Americans currently live with the disease.  The Sickle Cell Disease Awareness initiative, which was launched this sorority year, seeks to improve awareness about the painful and debilitating effects of SCD and currently available treatments.
