Community Health Fair - “Delivering Solutions for Total Body Health” is a Huge Success

On April 18th, 2009, approximately 200 members of the community and 30 organizations and health care professionals participated in the MCAC Health Fair. The Montgomery County (MD) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in partnership with Fairland Sports & Aquatics Complex hosted the event. The Health Fair was held at the Fairland Complex located at 13950 Old Gunpowder Rd in Laurel, Maryland.

The Health Fair provided health screenings covering vision, hearing, osteoporosis, posture, oral cancer and dental, diabetes, blood pressure, bone marrow, glaucoma and cholesterol. Information was provided on issues of men’s health, kidney disease, heart health, nutrition, women’s health issues, child safety (fingerprinting), Parkinson’s disease, mental health and family programs, wellness, cancer, and arthritis.

As an organization of predominately African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its members, but also the well-being of families and communities at large. To facilitate this effort, the Health Fair was launched to provide a focus on the Physical and Mental Health aspect of our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.

The Health Fair educated and facilitated lifestyle change for the physical and mental well-being the community. The purpose of the Health Fair was to provide useful information on various health topics and to provide free health screenings and fitness. It was a great forum to raise the awareness of the importance and benefits of lifestyle changes that would improve the quality of health.
