A Day of Arts and Social Action

A Day of Arts and Social Action

On Saturday, February 25th, MCAC Arts and Letters Committee and the Delta GEMS partnered in a Literacy Workshop for young women featured drama, poetry, music, and social injustice at Georgian Court Apartments.  The workshop entitled “Connecting Literature to the Arts…..Exploring Social Injustice” was facilitated by Jamila Payton, a Reading Teacher and Coach at Benjamin Banneker Middle School (Burtonsville) and Kelly Harper, Reading Teacher and Coach at Amidon Bowen Elementary School (DC).

25 young ladies participated–twelve from our GEMS Program and thirteen volunteers from MCAC and the community– in a full day of activities.  From the “People Bingo ”  to the “Art Gallery Walk” accompanied with cheese, grapes, sparkling cider in champagne glasses.  Girls reflected on the song “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye as well as on prejudice and basis through a video entitled “Speed Conversations on Social Issues.”  Girls were given the chance to win gift cards and gift bags.
